Product Description
Most Christians know John Newton as a man who once captained a slave ship, was dramatically converted to Christ on the high seas, and later penned one of the greatest hymns of the faith, "Amazing Grace." But he also had a huge impact on his times as an icon of the evangelical movement, as a great preacher and theologian, and as a seminal influence on abolitionist William Wilberforce. Newton's friendship with Wilberforce is portrayed in the major motion picture Amazing Grace. Jonathan Aitken's new biography John Newton explores all these facets of Newton's life and character. It is the first biography to draw on Newton's unpublished diaries and correspondence, providing fresh insight into the life of this complex and memorable Christian. The result is a fascinating, colorful, and historically significant portrait of John Newton, a self-described "great sinner" redeemed by a great Savior through amazing grace.

Could Not Put It Down
01 May, 2010
Wow... what a wonderful surprise this bio turned out to be. I wasn't too sure at first if I wanted to commit to reading a biography on a 18th century preacher but I'm glad I decided to do so. Yes, Newton was a man of God and clearly lived out his faith in a powerful way that helped change society for the better. But what I found more revealing about this bio is how much I could relate to the life of John Newton, apart from his faith, as recorded in his daily living. Well worth the read even if you do not believe the same things that Mr. Newton did.

Great Insight Into A Changed Life.
28 April, 2010
This was a very informative book on the life of an ordinary man who came to have an extrordinary faith. His early live was an example of the way things were at that time in history. The details of a slave ship and how the business of slavery was conducted was very eye opening. That God could use such a man to write one of our best loved hymns is wonderful. This was worth the read, and a great addition to any library.

More Than Amazing Grace
25 July, 2010
I have recommended this book to several people after reading it. The book covers much more than the inspiring moments and writing of Amazing Grace. We learn a great deal about who John Newton really was, why he was compelled to write the now treasured hymn, how he struggled on his own spiritual journey, how he made lasting impact on people's lives around him, and finally how he ultimately helped end the slave trade. The author has provided a comprehensive and yet vivid and engaging description of the remarkable life John Newton.
