Editorial Review / Publisher's Information:

Product Description
For at least thirty years, high school and college students have been taught to be embarrassed by American history. Required readings have become skewed toward a relentless focus on our country's darkest moments, from slavery to McCarthyism. As a result, many history books devote more space to Harriet Tubman than to Abraham Lincoln; more to My Lai than to the American Revolution; more to the internment of Japanese Americans than to the liberation of Europe in World War II.

Now, finally, there is an antidote to this biased approach to our history. Two veteran history professors have written a sweeping, well-researched book that puts the spotlight back on America's role as a beacon of liberty to the rest of the world.

They offer a long-overdue acknowledgment of America's true and proud history. They reexamine America's discovery, founding, and development with an appreciation for the principles of public virtue, personal liberty, and private property that have made this nation so uniquely successful.
Schweikart and Allen are careful to tell their story straight, from Columbus's voyage to the capture of Saddam Hussein. They do not ignore America's mistakes through the years, but they put them back in their proper perspective. And they conclude that America's place as a world leader derived largely from the virtues of our own leaders-- the men and women who cleared the wilderness, abolished slavery, and rid the world of fascism and communism.

The authors write in a clear and enjoyable style that makes history a pleasure, not just for students but also for adults who want to learn what their teachers skipped over.

 • Time Well Spent.
22 July, 2010

I enjoyed reading this book. I didn't feel as if I were being forced to do a reading assignment for a class and I didn't have to force myself to pick the book up to read just to finish it and move on to the next book. People will argue forever on the "slant" and "accuracy" of the history itself, but at this point it's as accurate as any other modern depiction in my opinion. I enjoyed reading the book and do not feel that I have wasted a week or so of my life in having read it.

 • Skimming The Surface Of True History
24 July, 2010

Great book, something every American should own. It gives a general overview and honest interpretation of the history of the United States. Some of the critics seem disappointed that it doesn't go in depth into some events. It isn't meant to. It is meant to give you an honest and general overview, what do you expect from a book covering 500 years of history? Although it does not go in depth into every subject, it still gives you a general understanding and debunks the revisionist history that America is greedy, racist, sexist, and bigots. Great book to start with if you are into history. This book should be in the house of every American, or someone who wants to escape the liberal version of history and learn the truth

 • A Pariot's History Of The United States
28 July, 2010

I have never reviewed a book, but this one deserves comment. I am a history teacher, hold advanced degrees in my field, and am appalled at this trite piece of trash masquerading as fact. This book is a disgusting collection of political propaganda and serves no purpose other than to reinforce the previously held views of lazy conservative readers. I am an independent moderate voter, so want to assure you that I am not commenting from an ideological perspective that would invalidate my response or review. This is the WORST example of an American history compendium I have ever read. Reality should not be optional, but this text ignores that consistently. I have never failed to finish reading a history book, but this is the exception. I have actually decided to not even resell my copy, feeling that the act of passing this text on to others is a disservice. There is nothing patriotic about twisting facts to manipulate the masses. The authors should be ashamed. BURN YOUR MONEY RATHER THAN BUYING THIS BOOK!

 • A Pathetic Apologia
21 July, 2010

A blind, flag waving pile of nonsense. Highly inaccurate in it's history, it serves as an apologia for imperialism, racism, slavery and genocide. This pathetic tract is a waste of the paper it's printed on. Save the trees and wait for the Disney cartoon version.

 • Beware The Negative Reviews Of This Amazing Book
27 July, 2010

This is an amazing work, one that I wish I had been required to read in grade school. My wife and I have home schooled our 11 year old for a year now and have no plans to return her to the mess that is public education system. This is one of the sources of material we are using for American History. If you are looking for a thoughtful and well researched book that does not rewrite history to fit a liberal agenda, then this is your book. This is not the only one I've read, but it is definitely the best so far. The negative reviewers here are pathetic and clearly have not actually read the book, and are providing only the pre-programmed responses they are taught to provide when confronted with the truth. If you truly have a mind of your own, pick up a copy of the book, READ IT, then make up your mind about it.
